ABOUT

ABSTRACT

The short version — MDS is a licensed building design firm which offers freelance design, drafting, and construction administrative services to the public. Our office is located in the downtown core of Toronto, however our projects span across the GTA, with some builds even taking place internationally. MDS is a sole proprietorship owned and operated by Michael MacNeill, a licensed BCIN designer and registered intern architect.

LAUNCH

The long(er) version — I started what would later become MDS working as a freelance draftsman and building code consultant during my evenings and weekends while attending the University of Toronto full time to earn my Master of Architecture degree.

LICENSING

Both the firm, and myself are fully insured and registered with unique Building Code Identification Numbers (BCIN). This allows me to legally work on and submit building permit applications for projects across all of Ontario. We are classified under the ‘Large Buildings’ category, meaning the projects I am able to work on are not limited in size or occupancy type.

GROWTH

Initial projects were limited to small additions for mostly residential projects. Since then I have been able to expand my services to reach all aspects of the design and construction process. I still work primarily on residential projects but have begun to start taking on commercial jobs as well.

VALUES

It is my belief that the best way to achieve sustainability in architecture, is to ensure buildings have the potential to last for hundreds of years. This is due to the high embodied energy inherent in our building materials. Demolition and replacement only serve to contribute more waste to our landfills and more CO2 into the environment. That is why I take the steps to ensure every project is built with longevity, durability, and adaptability in mind.

FUTURE

For the future of MDS I plan to continue pursuing both commercial and residential projects. While also beginning to lay the groundwork to one day be able to expand my scope to include adaptive reuse and construction management services. The former for reasons of environmental sustainability explained above, and the latter due to the practical and financial inventive afforded to both the architect and client alike.
